Documents that can potentially be recorded as Security Incidents are collected from the following sources. They result in 1000-2000 candidate articles and documents per day:
- Government portals where disclosures are made public, such as sec.gov.
- Over 140,000 online news sources and blogs in fifteen major languages.
- Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to about 35 US states.
Criteria
A public and credible source is required for every incident. This is because Security Incidents often have a large impact on a company’s Bitsight Security Rating or have a significant reputational impact.
Even though dark web data is collected, we do not currently publish such incidents unless there is additional corroborating evidence.
Review and Approval Process
The articles and documents are independently evaluated by at least one human researcher and are additionally subjected to AI-based analysis. The recorded incidents go through a rigorous final human review and approval process.
Because of our careful process, the typical news-based Security Incident takes approximately two days to appear in Bitsight—one day for research and one day to be processed by the daily ratings algorithm pipeline.
