A honeypot is a method used to detect attacks or deflect them from a legitimate target. A computer or computer system is designed to mimic likely targets of cyberattacks, intended to attract would-be attackers.
By monitoring traffic to such systems, cybercriminals can be better understood; including how they operate and what they want. More importantly, the effectiveness of security measures can be assessed — what’s working and which ones might need improvement.
